The Sonata for Violoncello and Basso continuo in F major by Nicola Porpora became popular in the virtuoso transcription of Alfredo Piatti, the outstanding cellist of the 19th century. The increased demand for the availability of Baroque music with authentic text made us prepare a new edition of the work which strictly adheres to the original notation. The present edition fully contains the original text; suggestions are only given concerning the performance. The present edition is based on a contemporary manuscript score kept in the British Library, London (shelf mark: ADD 14,125). Corrections, whenever necessary, have been made while the original is given in footnotes. The editotial additions have been put in brackets. In movement No.3 (Adagio) a second violoncello part has been given in small type above the main text; it contains editorial suggestions concerning the performance of the rhythm.
