Portsmouth, 1940. Eight-year-old Sammy Hodges is alone at home. His mother has died, his father, Dan works long hours at a shipping yard, and there"s no sign of his tearaway older brother. So Sammy"s neighbours in April Grove take pity on him, and arrange for him to be evacuated to the country. Ruth Purslow, a young childless widow, takes him in, her compassion aroused by his plight.
