There are over 50 recordings of Carl Orff's most famous work in the current catalogue, yet Andre Previn's 1975 account, here digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios, remains a classic. (Gramophone) Orff's 1937 'scenic cantata' is a confidently sensuous celebration of life's hedonistic pleasures, as expressed in the poems and songs of thirteenth-century wandering minstrels (probably disgraced monks). Orff's settings are memorably tuneful and exhilaratingly rhythmic, and this, coupled with the work's immensely skilful and attractive orchestration, have made Carmina Burana the most popular of all twentieth-century choral works.
