As a social phenomenon, motorization has pervaded every realm of human activity - cultural, political, and economic - all over the world. Such expressions as "automobiles age" and "car culture" used by James J. Flink and other historians refer not only to the motor vehicles themselves, but also, for example, to motor racing, industrial development, and class relations. A vast body of published works has arisen from more than a century of writing about automobiles and related subjects. This bibliography, unrivaled in scope and comprehensiveness, catalogs books on motor vehicles and motorization published through 1999. It includes monographs, theses, biographies, encyclopedias, other reference books, company and government publications, and buyer"s, collector"s, spotter"s and identification guides. Works specifically on motor vehicles are divided into four sections: automobiles; sports, muscle and racing cars; two-wheeled vehicles; and general works, other vehicles and automotive accessories and components. A separate section includes books about the broader subject of motorization: general works and cultural aspects; uses of motor vehicles; motor vehicles in industries; and individuals and organizations.
