AUTHORS PREFACE: Sport sounds rather a comprehensive title for a book devoted solely to Hunting and Shooting, and which omits all mention of Fishing. I excuse myself for this omission because, while it is possible to generalize about the two former sports, it is difficult to write at any length on fishing without becoming either egotistical or instructive. Sporting books that deal out instruction are usually somewhat boring, however valuable as works of reference wherefore I have resisted all temptation to tell of the capture of the great trout below the Bridge, and refrain from dissertations on the Spey cast which incidentally I have never mastered, the dressing of hackle- flies or the creation of a hatchery and kindred matters. Stalking is too specialized to make a general appeal, for only a fortunate few are abIe to realize the hopes and fears, the thrills and disappointments incidental to a clammy crawl through peat-bogs or a stealthy approach among the rocks of the high tops. Sport Hunting, Shooting, Fishing and Stalking- these are my favourites but I love all sports from Stag-hunting to Rat-catching and, save only Falconry, have taken part in them all. A sporting Jack-of-all-trades am I, if master of none, and as such I write what follows. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are now republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
