Vorangegangen war dem "1/12" Taler eine Abwertung des Kleingelds. Geprägt wurden die Doppelgroschen in Dresden und Leipzig. Der letzte Doppelgroschen wurde im Jahr 1836 geprägt und mit der Dresdner Münzkonvention vom 30. Juli 1838 abgeschafft.
