Dance, a living, growing art, has practically no literature to give voice to its basic philosophy, its theoretical problems, or its development in changing times, no literature that would present it not only as an expression of the immediate present, but also in the historic perspective of its past and in its projection into the future. We hope this first Dance News Annual will find a niche in American dance literature and will help bridge the gap between the topical material contained in newspapers and periodicals and the few books on dance subjects published from time to time.
