Silent Night

The popular carol "Silent Night" was written in 1818 to be accompanied by guitar instead of the traditional organ. The legend of the carol says that mice chewed through the bellows of the old organ in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria. With the organ broken, father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics and asked his friend Franz Gruber to set the words to guitar. The mice are playfully illustrated in this book and are frightened by the loud church organ and large choir. Their plan is to chew a hole in the organ bellows and take the wind out of its sails. The mice succeed in their mission but feel remorse watching the sad choir members and children as they anticipate Christmas service without music. Father Joseph Mohr saves the day by remembering Jesus was born in a humble stable, so he writes a humble carol "Silent Night" to save the day!
