This collection of UK number one hits from 1959, the final year of the decade, illustrate even more clearly how the face of popular music was changing. The singers who held sway at the beginning of the decade, who relied on professional songwriters to provide their material, had almost been supplanted by the singer-songwriter and the rock and roller. Dream Lover, for example, was both written and performed by Bobby Darin (although he would revive Mack The Knife later in the year), whilst Jerry Keller similarly filled both slots on Here Comes Summer. The popularity of Elvis Presley showed little sign of waning as he registered another two chart toppers, whilst the man many regarded as the UK answer to Elvis, Cliff Richard, also scored the first two of his career. There was a posthumous number one for Buddy Holly, killed in a plane crash in February 1959, whilst at the other end of the musical spectrum Russ Conway netted two chart toppers with his unique piano style. All in all, 1959 proved to be a diverse year, as this album proves.
