The innovative Juan d"Arienzo - "El Rey del Compas" (King of the Beat) - breathed new life into the tango, encouraging other orchestras to start using arrangements with a stronger beat as well as faster tempi. He used more modern arrangements and instrumentation and his popular group produced hundreds of recordings, accompanied by singers such as Alberto Echague, Armando Laborde and Hector Maure.
