McRae and Ringer s first season as works Subaru drivers 1991 produced a British Rally Championship victory for the Legacy but 1992 was a transitional year The pair repeated their triumph on the British Championship winning all 6 events but also contested 6 World Rally Championship events most notably finishing 2nd in Sweden In the car modelled here McRae and Ringer led the opening Welsh loop of their home event the RAC However the need to take avoiding action during a road section after encountering a Range Rover coming towards them on their side of the road led to damage that ultimately saw the pair slip to a disappointing 6th place In 1992 long time RAC Rally Sponsors Lombard put up a prize of 100 000 for any British driver who could win the event outright and for a while it looked as if McRae might be able to claim that prize
