Image and Imperialism in the Ottoman Revolutionary Press, 1908-1911 Through 100 cartoons that appeared in the Istanbul press commenting on the confrontations between tradition and modernity, the Orient and Occident, and rhetoric and reality, Brummett (history, U. of Tennessee) offers a new view of the Ottoman Constitutional Revolution. She places them in the context of relations between the empire and Europe and the history of the press, and shows how Ottoman cartoonists merged the literary and artistic cultures of east and west by comparing the press productions and art of Europe, India, Latin America, and the Middle East.
