Maestro supreme Frank Chacksfield returns to the Vocalion label once again for this, the first of three CDs to feature his music in Vocalion"s July 2009 releases. Both albums heard here are from Chacksfield"s extensive Decca "Phase 4" discography, and highlight his ability to handle music from the standard repertoire as well as the more contemporary pop songs of the 1970s. First up is "The New Limelight", which incorporates classic melodies by legendary "tin pan alley" composers such as Cole Porter (In the Still of the Night and Night and Day) and Harold Arlen (Come Rain or Come Shine and The Man that Got Away). Also included are timeless tunes that graced some equally memorable films: Chaplin"s Limelight and Richard Addinsell"s Warsaw Concerto. At the opposite end of the spectrum is 1971"s "Chacksfield Plays Bacharach", which is of course a tribute to the song writing genius of Burt Bacharach. Frank Chacksfield, with the assistance of arranger Johnny Keating, casts twelve gorgeous Bacharach numbers in spellbinding orchestrations that add new lustre to each, with titles including Raindrops Keep Fallin" on My Head, The Look of Love, This Guy"s in Love With You, (They Long to Be) Close to You and Wives and Lovers.
