As both co-founder of The Kinks and an iconoclastic solo artist, Dave Davies is one of rock"s most influential and identifiable figures. His innovative guitar work has been a seminal influence upon multiple generations of musicians, and his uncompromising persona has established him as an enduring icon of rock "n" roll attitude. As longtime fans already know, there"s a lot more to Davies than his formidable four-and-a-half- decade body of music. The Englishman"s evolution as a musician, songwriter and recording artist has paralleled his passionate pursuit of spiritual knowledge. That aspect of Davies" life is at the heart of Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey. The feature-length documentary, which Davies co-directed with his son Martin Davies, is a personally-charged memoir of Dave"s long-running quest for enlightenment. Through a mix of newly shot footage, interview segments and archival material including rare vintage home movies of The Kinks on tour Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey offers a unique insight into Davies" inner life. With Davies serving as on-screen narrator, Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey encompasses the artist"s investigations into Eastern philosophies, spiritualism, astrology, meditation and psychic phenomena. With a soundtrack featuring music drawn from various periods of his career as well as the new track "New Dawn, New Day," Mystical Journey reveals a side of Davies that"s been hinted at in his songwriting, but which he"s rarely discussed in detail in his public life. "It"s something that I"ve touched on in interviews over the years," Davies notes. "But I"ve never really had a chance to talk about at length. Music is extremely important to me, of course, but it"s not the only thing. And I think that introducing people to the spiritual side gives some perspective to the music I"ve done." The release of Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey marks the fruition of Davies" longstanding desire to create a film documenting his spiritual pursuits. "For years, it was very difficult to talk about these things," Davies adds. "In the Kinks, we"d be having a few beers after a gig and I"d be reading a book on spiritualism or astrology, and someone would pick it up and they"d be horrified. With every step I"d take towards seeking out my spiritual life, I"d have to deal with family and friends thinking I"d gone a bit mad." Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey illustrates how Davies" inquiries into the unseen world have influenced his musical evolution, and vice versa. Growing up in a working-class family in the Muswell Hill area of London, David Russell Gordon Davies was part of a generation of young British males whose lives were transformed by their exposure to the first generation of American rock "n" roll. As a rebellious teenager, he embraced music while developing an acute spiritual awareness. "When I was very young and first became interested in these subjects," he recalls, "they were kept very hidden and very quiet. At the time, there were only a few people you could talk to about these things, and the information wasn"t readily at hand. So if you wanted to investigate this stuff, you really had to dig." While still in his teens, Davies was joined by his older brother Ray in a series of rock "n" roll combos, which by 1964 had solidified into The Kinks. The Kinks quickly emerged as one of the most original and influential bands of the British Invasion. While remaining a member of the Kinks, Dave took his first steps as a solo artist in 1967, scoring a Number Two single in Britain with "Death of A Clown." Despite The Kinks" turbulent internal chemistry, the band proved remarkably durable through subsequent decades, before quietly disbanding in 1996. Meanwhile, Dave successfully relaunched his solo career in 1980, releasing such
