Still in his early 20s, Russo-lsraeli pianist Boris Giltburg is already an artist of depth and maturity, with recital and concert engagements throughout the world. Critics have praised his ability to "look below the surface" (Frankfurter Atlqemeine Zeirtingt and his "technical assurance, clarity of sound and overwhelming musicality" (El Pais). After his stunning debut at the Miami International Piano Festival in 2004, Giltburg was re-invited to perform there on May 11, 2006, the concert presented on this DVD. The Miami Herald wrote of the performance:"An exciting display of interpretive freedom. Bach"s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue had stunning exhilaration. The clarity of Bach"s inner voices was but one example of Giltburg"s technical mastery. He brought tremendous extremes of volume and dynamics to Schubert"s "Wanderer" Fantasy. Giltburg"s subtle, imaginatively lyrical flights were often beguiling. With big boned virtuosity to burn, he sailed through Serin bin"s Sonata No. 2 in G-sharp minor with marvelous freedom and inflected the Chopinesque filigree with rippling beauty. In Liszt"s huge Sonata in B minor, Giltburq"s penchant for adventurous, unconventional phrasing took center stage. His was a fascinating traversal in the true Liszt mold - delicate, flaming, and exciting. As encores, Giltburg brought romantic languor to Rachmaninoff"s witty take on Fritz Kreisler"s Liebesleidand jazzy power to the first of Gershwin"s Three Preludes"JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue in D minor, BWV 903FRANZ SCHUBERT Fantasia in C Major, D. 760 "Wanderer"ALEXANDER SCRIABIN Sonata No. 7 in G-sharp minor, Op. 19 "Sonata-Fantasy"FRANZ LISZT Sonata in B minor, S. 178Encores by Kreisler-Rachmaninoff and Gershwin BORIS GILTBURG, pianoRecorded live, May 11, 2006 Lincoln Theatre, Miami Beach, Florida
